About PTA
WELCOME, to Turner Creek’s PTA. The PTA stands for Parent-Teacher Association and the mission of this organization is to support the students and staff by enriching their education and experience during their time at Turner Creek Elementary School.
What is the PTA and What does it do?
Joining the PTA does not mean that you are volunteering your time in the school. It is a way of financially supporting your school at the beginning to support our efforts to continue to provide the opportunities listed below for your children as well as allows your vote to be counted for our budget and programs. Volunteering for events in the school is very much needed as well. Please consider giving some of your time back to TCE. Both you and your children will benefit from this wonderful opportunity.
For those of you who are new to our school or new to Wake County, the PTA is instrumental in helping secure funding for many needed resources that the students and teachers use throughout the school year. Some of the past PTA purchases have been purchasing SMARTBOARDS for every classroom and shade structures for over both of our playgrounds. Besides Building and Grounds, the PTA offers teacher Grants to reimburse some teacher’s out-of-pocket expenses. The PTA is responsible for producing the school Directory, the school Yearbook, weekly Newsletters and maintaining and updating the TCE PTA Website. The PTA also tries to make parents’ lives easier by offering parents the chance to order school supplies ahead of time through Pre-Order Supplies and Readers & Agendas. These items are sold at cost and help parents avoid the hassle of shopping for school. We support the Health & Safety of our students and school by keeping first-aid kits stocked and, as well as an added responsibility of Crossing Guard to protect the crosswalk next to Turner Creek Road and the Harmony neighborhood.
Besides providing valuable resources and offering helpful services, the PTA also organizes events for the students and parents to enjoy together. These events not only display their hard work and effort during the year, but create a sense of community within the school. We’ve had Math Night and Literacy Night where students get to show their parents the skills they have been learning and allow siblings to see their classrooms. Our annual Spring Frogapalooza showcases at least one piece of artwork from each and every student while the TCE Talent Show gives students the chance to demonstrate their individual or group talent and creativity as well as provide a unique opportunity to learn about the culture and family fellow TCE classmates. Through the United Arts Program, the PTA brings artists, writers and even puppeteers to visit or perform at the school who are willing to share their knowledge and passion for the creative arts. Through the PTA-sponsored Reflections contest, students are encouraged to develop their own artistic talent and pursue their imagination with the production of their own artistic submission. The PTA’s Chess Club encourages students to think strategically as well as develop good gamesmanship skills through tournament participation. And at the end of the year, the PTA runs Field Day, an elementary school staple that gives students the chance to engage in some physical activity while enjoying the warmer weather outdoors.
In addition to organizing events, the PTA strives to give students an appreciation for the values of good character and illustrate the importance of gratitude. To accomplish this, the PTA runs the programs of Character Education and Service to Others. To express our appreciation for the hard work and dedication of the TCE staff, the PTA celebrates Staff Birthdays, Teacher Appreciation Week and hosts Staff Appreciation Lunches.
But, of course, none of these programs would be possible without the PTA’s fundraising activities. Citipass, that ties our school to the community as well as our newest addition of Booster-thon while the School Store and Spirit Wear fundraisers give students products they can use and wear right in the classroom and are offered year round. Labels and Linking Up are programs that are of no cost to parents while all the proceeds from Book Fair are given back to the Library.
Now, that you know a little more about what the PTA is and what it does for Turner Creek, we would like to invite you to join the PTA for the 2012-2013 school year. Your membership and participation are essential to the success of the PTA and we hope that you will consider becoming a part of this very rewarding and important organization.
Please consider giving some of your time back to TCE. Both you AND your children will benefit from this wonderful experience.
THE PTA WELCOMES YOU
TO A NEW AND EXCITING 2012-2013 SCHOOL YEAR!
