History

Turner Creek Year Round Elementary opened in July of 2004 as a brand new school. The property was acquired by Wake County Public Schools in September of 2001. The property was purchased from Garland Walker and Bertha Scott Herndon who were the owners since 1936. Aaron and Corriner Scott owned the property from 1900 to 1936.

The Scott/Herndon property had been used for farmland and a home place. Animals and Livestock as well as a variety of birds and wildlife, including treefrogs lived on the property. It also was the home of an elementary school named Scott Grove Elementary School. Bertha Herndon received her initial education at Scott Grove Elementary School. She was a first generation college graduate who taught school in the Chatham County Public School System for 38 years. She and her husband, Garland, produced three children with each becoming educators in the Wake County Public School System. Two of their great-grand children (Aaron and Corriner Scott's great-great grandchildren) are current members of the school body of Turner Creek Road Elementary school.
