Curriculum Focus

Balanced Literacy

A balanced literacy framework will be used to provide a structure to accommodate the varying needs of students. This framework integrates reading, writing and word study activities that are essential for promoting literacy achievement.

Approaches include the integration of directed guided reading lessons, with a focus on strategic reader skills to be used before, during, and after reading. Students learn through a balance of direct instruction, guided practice, and independent activities.

Research indicates that the relationship between high quality classroom instruction and a balanced literacy approach, result in successful reading achievement.

Our goal is to work as a team to insure that best literacy practices are implemented to effectively educate our children for ongoing success.

Core Knowledge

Core Knowledge provides sequenced learning in the areas of:

Language Arts       Geography

Mathematics         Science

World History       Visual Arts

American History   Music

Core Knowledge helps children build a foundation of commonly used knowledge that is often taken for granted in our society. The knowledge and concepts presented form a strong foundation for higher-order reading, writing and thinking skills. The curriculum supplements the NC Standard Course of Study by insuring that children are introduced in the early grades to many aspects of world and American history, literature, science and cultural arts.
