Mid Year Kindergarten Benchmarks (Literacy)

*These are minimum expectations

*Pre-reading skills:  Identifies the front and back of a book, the title, knows here to begin reading the story, is aware that print carries message, knows the directions to read (left to right), is able to distinguish between a letter and word and is also able to distinguish between a capital and lower case letter.

*Letter Recognition-Visual recognition of most capital and lower case letters.

*Letter Sounds- Recognizes at least 15 letter sounds.

*Writing- Writes top to bottom, writes left to right, draws pictures to convey message, starting to use initial and some ending consonants in writing (sounding out words).

 

End of the Year Expectations (Literacy)

            *These are minimum expectations

*Pre-reading skills- In addition to the skills for the first semester, knows where to go at the end of a line, identifies at least 3 letters on a page, identifies the first and last word on a page, identifies the first and last letter in a word, identifies a period and a question mark and can demonstrate one-to-one correspondence.

*Letter Recognition- Recognizes and writes all upper and lowercase letters. 

*Letter Sounds- Recognizes all consonant letter sounds.

*Writing- Uses a mixture of drawings, letters, and words, to convey meaning. Is beginning to use letter/sound correspondence and often begins words with the initial consonants.  Is beginning to use simple punctuation, (capital letters at beginning of sentences and periods at the end) and spacing between words.

*Reading- Reads simple predictable language books and comprehens what is read.  Recognizes and reads all Kindergarten sight words: the, of, and, a, to, in, is, you, that, it, he, was, for, are, on.

 

Mid-Year Math Expectations

*Rote count to 30

*One-to-one correspondence to identify how many (1-10)

*Model and use directional/positional words (in, over, etc)

*Sort by given attribute (color, size, shape, etc.)

*Count backwards from 10

*Recognize circle, square, triangle, rectangle, and describe their likenesses and differences.

*Compare objects (likenesses and differences)

*Sort objects by own rule and explain

*Identify, copy, continue and describe patterns

 

End of Year Math Expectations

*Uses ordinals 1st and 5th

*Compare and order objects using appropriate vocabulary

*Name the days of the week, answering what comes before/after___

*Create patterns with actions, words and objects

*Writes numbers 0-9

*Combine and remove objects from set, describe results

*Share equally between 2 people and explain (even and odd numbers)

*Complete simple spatial visualization tasks and puzzles

*Estimate quantities less than 20

*Create and describe groups.
