a WebQuest for third grade- social studies

                                 Introduction

You and your partner are transported back in time to the Colonial America. All of a sudden your life has changed dramatically! You no longer wear the same clothes or live in the same house! You do not even have lights or a bathroom inside your house. What are some of the other ways your life is different?

Work with your partner to find answers to the following questions.

The Process

 

Session 1: Get Excited!

1.      Open up: http://www.plimoth.org/education/olc/index_js2.html

2.      Click on the blue words “here”

3.      Listen to the show- don’t skip intro.

4.      When the menu screen comes up, it takes a few minutes

5.      When the word “Enter” comes up in the bottom of the middle box, you can click on that word.

6.      Click on Fact of Myth first- see how many you can get correct!

7.      When you are done, you can click on the word Exit at the bottom of the screen and you can choose anything from the menu.

8.      When time is up you are going to click the exit word and then the exit word again.

 

Session 2: Children’s Clothing

1.      Your teacher will assign you a partner to work with.

2.      Open up:  http://library.thinkquest.org/J002611F/videos.htm#farming

3.      Click on the video for ‘Our Clothing’

4.      Pay attention to what they are wearing because you are going to draw

5.      When you have finished, you can minimize the Internet in case you want to watch it again

6.      Open up Kid Pix and draw the girl or the boy with the colonial clothes. If you want you can draw on paper or use construction paper to make.

7.      Print it out and put your name on your paper.

8.      If you have time, draw or make the other child from colonial times. For example, if you did the girl first, now make a boy from colonial times.

 

Session 3: Come and Get It!

1.      Open up: http://library.thinkquest.org/J002611F/videos.htm#farming     

2.      Read through the information about what they ate in Colonial times.

3.      Get a Venn diagram from your teacher.

4.      Compare and contrast food from Colonial times to present times. Make sure you have at least 3-5 things in each part of the diagram.

5.      Put your name on your paper and turn in to your teacher.

6.      If you have time, write 3 –5 sentences about what food you would miss the most if you lived in Colonial times.

 

Session 4: Have Fun!

1.      Open up: http://noahwebsterhouse.org/games.html

2.      Read through the information about games.

3.      Open up: Colonial Games.kid (a Kidspiration document)

4.      Use the chart at the top of the Internet page to plug in the information comparing and contrasting games from Colonial times and Present times.

5.      Print out and put your name on your paper.

6.      If you have time, you can look for pictures of toys that would go in present times or Colonial times. Put them on your Venn diagram.

7.      If you have time, write 3 other facts from the web page on the back of your Venn diagram.

 

Session 5: School House Rocks!

1.      Open up: http://library.thinkquest.org/J002611F/school.htm

2.      Read through the information about Colonial schools.

3.      Minimize the Internet

4.      Open up Kidspiration

5.      Make a bubble map about Colonial Schools.

6.      The topic bubble needs to be Colonial Schools.

7.      The describing bubbles coming from the topic are facts from the reading.

8.      You need to have five or more describing bubbles.

9.      Print the Bubble Map and turn it in to your teacher. Be sure to write your NAME on your paper!

 

Session 6: Letter to Home!

**You are going to work by yourself on this part of the assignment.

Remember that you have been transported back in time. You have now finished researching Colonial times and how it is different from present times. You are going to write a letter to your mom or dad about how your life is different now that you are living in Colonial times. Tell them about what you like, don’t like, what you miss, what you don’t miss, how people act, etc.

*Make sure you have all the parts to a friendly letter and complete sentences. Check your spelling and punctuation- reread the letter before you turn it in!

Please print out a copy of this rubric. Put your name on it and place it in your Social Studies folder until you complete all of the assignments.



Conclusion

Hopefully, you learned a lot about what life was like for children during colonial times. What do you think about life back then? Do you think you would have liked growing up during colonial days?
